Family therapy and counseling deal with those relationships which can be the most challenging of all: the ones with the people who have lived or are currently living under the same roof as you. Unlike conflict or communication issues at work, you can’t go to HR to complain, change departments, or get a new job to solve the problems: they are there when you wake up in the morning and are still there when you go to bed at night.
Getting to the root of family issues can be challenging. Family difficulties often span many years and even generations. There may be years of past emotional (and sometimes physical) harm that need to be discussed, processed, and brought to closure. Sometimes conflicts are relatively straightforward communication problems, but they can also be the result of a family member’s substance use, abusive behavior, and/or mental health issues and the impact they are having on the rest of the family.
Dealing with them on your own is always complicated by the emotions and biases rooted in that history, so having a professional family therapist or counselor to help untangle all the strands can be helpful.
